Configure providers

Register the source hypervisor with MTV on the destination OpenShift cluster. Seed must already have succeeded (Seeding Ansible Automation Platform).

When you are done, MTV shows a provider with a green check in the target’s mtv_namespace (usually openshift-mtv).

Run this from AAP. The template is OpenShift Virtualization Migration - MTV Provider (vmf_mtv_provider / mtv_provider). One source–target pair per launch. See mtv_provider.

Prerequisites

Survey extra vars:

  • source_name — host in vm_sources.

  • target_name — host in migration_clusters. That host’s vm_sources list must include source_name.

Launch from AAP

  1. In AAP, open Templates under Automation Execution.

  2. Launch OpenShift Virtualization Migration - MTV Provider.

  3. Survey: Source Name and Target Name (inventory host names).

  4. Attach the OpenShift credential for the target cluster if the template asks for credentials.

  5. Launch and wait until the Provider CR is Ready (the role waits by default).

If the target has several sources, launch once per pair.

The role reads type, host, sdk_endpoint, and VDDK from the source host. Username and password come from the Migration Factory - Source Environment credential.

Optional extra vars: mtv_provider_provider_namespace if the provider must not land in openshift-mtv. mtv_provider_provider_state: absent removes a provider and its secret.

Confirm the provider

In the OpenShift web console: Migration → Providers for virtualization. Select the mtv_namespace project. A green check means the connection is valid.

MTV Providers

The openshift-mtv namespace may not appear in the Project dropdown. Select Show default projects so projects that start with openshift are listed.

For VMware with a VDDK image, confirm the VDDK secret exists in that namespace (Workloads → Secrets). Do not create maps here; that is Configure storage and network maps.

If provider creation fails

  • source_name or target_name missing, or not in inventory — use the same host names as in vm_sources / migration_clusters.

  • Source not in the target’s vm_sources list — fix the inventory and seed again if the AAP inventory is stale.

  • Forklift Provider CRD missing — OpenShift.

  • Source credentials missing — they come from the source credential type seed created.

When you are done

MTV has a provider for this source.
